Darren Curovic recently talked to fightmag.net about his up-coming fight night event.
FIGHTMAG: Hi Darren, how are you? Full of stress before the tournament?
DARREN CUROVIC: All good thanks. Yes alot of work at the moment with finding a suitable venue, getting sponsors & match making, plus the many small but very important things that need to be done to ensure our show Domination 3 is successful & runs smoothly. No need to stress too much as it doesn’t help things.
FIGHTMAG: Tell us about Domination?
DARREN CUROVIC: It is a partnership between myself & my good friend & ex-training partner Blair Smith. We both started training & fighting in Muay Thai in the 1990’s under Geoff Devine at Saktienchai gym. We both now run gyms that produce good fighters, Kao Sok & Thai Boxing Pit. Domination is the name of our series of shows.

FIGHTMAG: How did you start promoting and managing fighters? What was your motivation behind this? How does it work in WA?
DARREN CUROVIC: I started promoting shows (Muay Thai, MMA & Boxing) in 2002 with my good friend Brett Dalton, we were called Big Time Thai Boxing. A few years later some of Western Australia’s top promoters had a meeting & decided the best way to take the sport further was to join forces & become one strong promotional group. Some called us the magnificent seven, we called ourselves Muay Thai Western Progression. On one of our shows, top WA fighter Eugene “Boom Boom” Ekkelboom won the World Muaythai Council Super-middleweight World title from champion Jiri Zak from Czek Republic. Boom Boom has since successfully defended his title many times, the latest being on the huge main event televised show in Jamaca, Champions of Champions Series. He defeated Dutch legend Ryen Simson.
Eventually some of the group wanted to do their own thing so we split up & went our separate ways, with Darren Reece & Peter Boyd now doing the Supremacy shows & the others deciding they wanted to do their own individual promotions. I had a short break from promoting then one day whilst talking with Blair we decided to team up in promoting. Since the beginning my main aim in taking up the difficult job of promoting is to expose our WA fighters to battles with the best fighters from all over the world so they can progress to the highest possible level.
FIGHTMAG: Darren, you have been managing fighters from Eastern Europe since 2005, bringing them to Australia . Could you tell us why and how you started managing and bringing fighters from Eastern Europe?
DARREN CUROVIC: Yes I fought & became friends with some of the Eastern European fighters in various World Championships in Bangkok & I was amazed how good these fighters were, they consistently finished 1st in the overall country placings, even ahead of Thailand. These fighters were well known in European circles so I decided to give the Aussie public a chance to see them in action. Also these fighters have hard lives so it would give them a chance to see this side of the world. I managed multiple World Champions like Andrei Molchonov, Vitaly Gurkov (both Belarus) & Dimitri Borulko (Ukraine), plus lots of other top fighters such as Yury Satsuk, Alexandr Kryvarotau, Sergei Martynau and Parviz Iskenderov. These boys fought WA fighters & also traveled interstate to Queensland, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney to take on some of Australia’s best fighters.

FIGHTMAG: Domination 1 we have seen Daniel Dawson in a boxing fight, Domination 2 – featured some of WA’s top fighters including Marco Tentori, Tobby Smith, Mitchell Seth and Alex James. Any big surprizes for the third tournament? Is the fight card ready yet?
DARREN CUROVIC: Yes Domination 3 will feature Womens World Title fight between WA’s Caley Lewis trained by Darren Reece & the current World Champion Sindy Huyer from Italy. So soon WA may have two Muay Thai World Champions, Eugene & Caley, both trained by Darren Reece at Riddlers Gym. Also Blair’s son young gun Toby Smith will fight Tim Morrison from Riddlers Gym & Parviz Iskenderov vs Sakonpetch Mungkorn Daeng from Thailand. Also many other fights featuring WA fighters vs fighters from all over Australia.
FIGHTMAG: Darren, being a fighter, with 20 years experience in this sport, your still moving, running the gym, managing fighters, organizing fight night events … what are your future plans and what should WA’s muaythai fans expect from PURE ADRENALINE?
DARREN CUROVIC: Myself & Blair have some big plans which will take place in the not too distant future, plans that will make WA Muay Thai & Domination really big world wide.
FIGHTMAG: Thank you, Darren, for your time. See you on Domination!
DARREN CUROVIC: My pleasure, Thank you.
